Transformation, From The Inside Out

Since I made the decision to finally lose weight and get healthy, it was important to realize that my physical appearance has a lot to do with the way I feel about myself and not just what I see in the mirror or what others see. It has to do with my mental and spiritual health and that has to begin with getting the negativity out and positive energy in. It must also consist of positive self-talk. But when we have resentment or anger hidden within us, it’s nearly impossible to feel good about ourselves and others.

I have always been an advocate for keeping a diary or journal, because those are our raw thoughts that no one else is allowed to see or know. So, I took a trip to Indigo and spent way too much on a rustic leather journal for myself; a small incentive for thinking about and focusing on myself first. However, I cannot walk around with the journal all the time due to the bulkiness of it. So, I have been writing notes to myself with the date and timestamp on my iPhone notes and then later rewriting them in my fancy journal. I know, the double writing (and typing) may seem tedious; however, I have found that as I read back what I wrote earlier, it helps me reflect and sort out those thoughts and feelings.

Another tactic I have found to work towards bringing my mind and heart to peace is that I have began telling people how they make me feel. I am confronting people when things upset and hurt me. No, I am not fighting anyone, but yes, I am speaking openly. On the flip side, if someone makes me feel special or warm with something they say or do for me, I make sure to let them know that as well.

I am going through a phase of transforming who I am. I feel like I am shedding layers of resentment, anger, and unhappy thoughts. I am also realizing that I have many hidden thoughts that need to start coming out so that I can deal with them and move on. This has led me to feel more comfortable in my skin. I’m still not sleeping as much as I should, however, I am not feeling as uneasy anymore.

Baby steps! That’s all I’m focusing on, taking baby steps and everyday doing one thing that makes me feel happy, warm or thankful inside.

And today I’m thankful for you being here and reading the journey of my battle with myself. Thank you for taking a few minutes of your time to share my life with me. 🙏🏼

Hello, May!

image1.jpegApril brought with it an array of horrid weather. I’m sick of all the rain, mixed temperatures, snow and dull, grey skies. I hope May brings the complete opposite!

I’m ready for going on walks and enjoying evenings in the park with my little munchkin. I’m excited for our endless evenings on the balcony blowing bubbles and barbecuing and drives down to the Scarborough Bluffs. It’s about time Toronto got some good weather!

Along with all of that, I’m jumping on the healthy eating and weight loss bandwagon again, starting today. I’ve decided to come working out 4-5 days a week with a mixture of low-carbohydrate foods and intermittent fasting.

Early January, I was doing intermittent fasting and it worked well for me, especially with the way my schedule was. My schedule has slightly changed now, however, I find an 18/6 hour timeline will work best for me. Combine the fasting with a no-white diet or low-carb and I should be on my way to finally getting rid of this post-partum body I’ve held on to so long.

I also, recently purchased dumbbells to get my arms toned. I was looking for at home exercises that were easy and effective and came across a couple of videos on YouTube that has been working out pretty good for me. I go through both videos within 30 minutes and can feel my body burning. Those workouts are going to be combined with 40-60 minute walks and once the pounds start shedding off, I’ll incorporate getting myself to the gym for more intense workouts.

But for now, I’m starting with this and I’m not setting long-term goals because if you know my past history with weight-loss you’ll know that long-term goals haven’t worked for me. So, I’ve made the short, easy to achieve goals for myself, starting with a simple weight loss of 7-10 pounds per month. I think, this goal is realistic and can be easily achieved with determination.

For my stretches, I was looking for a video that stretched my whole body and actually made me feel like I was working hard. The below video has been great for doing just that. 14 minutes of stretches, each stretch ranging about 30 seconds and at the end of it, you feel it throughout your whole body. My daughter loves doing these stretches with me and has become a good after-school activity for us 5-6 times a week.

Here’s one of the videos I’m using to lose arm flab. I’m using 5 lbs. dumbbells I bought at Walmart for really cheap ($5 each) and they work great. This video allows me to work my arms, shoulders and helps my posture and is easy enough to do that I don’t lose my determination to do it. I’m using this video 4 days a week and think it is working great for me.

Complete these exercises with a nice 40-60 minute brisk walk and I promise you, you’ll feel like you’ve accomplished the world when it comes to your health.

I’ve only just begun my routine and so, I cannot post any results yet. However, give me a couple of weeks on this new grind and I’ll post some before/after monthly photos.

Until then, enjoy the resto f your week! xoxo

Juice Cleanse: Day 2

JuicesToday’s juice cleanse was a bit easier than yesterday. I feel less tired and more energized. However, as great as the juices taste and salad is, I find it quite hard to look-forward to eating a salad at the end of the day. Mind you, I never did really like salads to start with. The metaboost salad tastes good and has a variety of ingredients in it. But I just would rather choose a steak instead of a salad.

As for the actual cleanse, I kept my routine pretty much the same as yesterday. 2 cups of black coffee, followed by lots of water, 4 juices and finishing the day off with my salad. Straight-forward and simple!

Physically, I don’t feel like I’ve lost any weight in the past day or “cleansed” for that matter. Overall, my body feels lighter, I’m not bloated and I have a little more energy than I normally do.

I have not begun drinking the warm lemon-water and I don’t plan on either. Being an asthma patient, lemons caused my asthma to flare up. So, I have to be extremely cautious with when I use lemons or lemon juice. Instead, I recalled a water recipe my mother had forced me into drinking after Ni was born. This water mixture was to help me shed off the baby-weight and it certainly helped.

Here’s what you need:

  • 1 tbsp. fennel seeds (sonf)
  • 1 tbsp. carom seeds (ajwain)
  • 2-3 black cardamom (moti ilaichi)
  • 1 tbsp. chopped ginger
  • 8-10 cups of water

Here’s what you do:

  • Bring water to a boil in a large pot
  • Add fennel seeds, carom seeds, cardamom and ginger and let boil for 10-15 minutes
  • Let cool and drink ½ a cup at a time
  • In the mornings and after meals, warm before drinking

I enjoy bottling this water mixture up and bringing it to work with me. It’s definitely an acquired taste, but if you can get past the taste, the benefits are plenty. It helps flush out toxins, reduces bloating and helps breakdown fat.

Try it out and let me know you think!

Juice Cleanse: Day 1

JuicesAs you all know, I’ve started the Freshii juice cleanse again. I’m challenging myself to lose 20 lbs. by the end of May, to fit into a new dress I recently purchased. What better way to kick-off a weight-loss challenge than by cleansing your body? I love Freshii’s juices, they taste great and are always made fresh right in front of you. The price is slightly steep but the taste is absolutely worth it.

For those of you that are newcomers on my blog, this is the second time I’m doing this juice cleanse. You can read the results of the first HERE and there are links for the daily details listed below.

Here are my day one results and thoughts:

7am – Green Energy Juice
This is a delicious juice. But the tastes are strong and really wake you up in the morning. I enjoyed my first juice driving on my way to work.

8am – Large cup of black coffee
Although, the cleanse asks you to limit caffeine, I just cannot live without my morning dose of java. Instead of a regular coffee with milk and sugar, I opted for a black.

10am – Carrot Zinger Juice
I love this juice. Just as I start feeling the toll of waking up early, this juice seriously refreshes me and gets me going again.

1pm – Mighty Detox
This is a bit zesty and has a kick to it. But that’s probably why I enjoy it so much.

2pm – Medium cop of black coffee
I couldn’t resist. One cup is just NEVER enough!

3pm – Red Power Juice
This is my absolute favorite. I drink this every time I go to Freshii and its filling and keeps the hunger pangs away and keeps me going until dinner time.

6pm – Metaboost Salad
The quantity is just perfect and so is the taste. It definitely fills you up and prepares you for the next day.

There were a couple of times throughout the day that I felt the need to eat something. But decided to chew on some sugar-free gum instead. I kept myself well-hydrated with lots of water. But I did cheat and have an extra cup of coffee mid-way through the day. I feel, if I’m not adding sugar or milk, it’s not really cheating, right?

Day 1 was a breeze, but it normally is isn’t it? It’s easier to deal with hunger-pangs because your mind is determined to succeed and complete the challenge you’ve taken on. I just hope day 2 goes just as well.

Post-Cleanse Nutritional Information From Freshii

JuicesAfter my juice cleanse, I questioned the staff at Freshii to provide post-cleanse information and luckily for me, their In-house Nutritionist contacted me with the following information:

The easiest mistake that any Juice Cleanser can make is to eat the wrong foods post-cleanse. Your digestive system is very delicate after a cleanse, having not digested much for days. First and foremost, it is important to avoid all processed & packaged unhealthy foods; meats, cow’s diary, coffee and alcohol. If you jump right back into making unhealthy food choices, not only will you experience uncomfortable physical symptoms (stomach pain, bloating & nausea), but you will actually hinder the progress you made while cleansing! Take the days after you finish your cleanse as an opportunity to continue the detoxification process. Ease off the cleanse with clean, wholesome and easy to digest foods.

  • Begin each morning with a glass of warm water with freshly squeezed lemon.
  • Drink a superfood smoothie for breakfast with ingredients such as spinach, kale, chia seeds, hemp seeds, avocado, coconut oil and berries.
  • Consume lots of raw or lightly steamed vegetables, fruits, green salads & vegetable soups.
  • Slowly incorporate gluten-free grains into your plant-based meals-i.e. quinoa, brown rice, millet and amaranth.
  • Stick to plant-based proteins in the days following your cleanse (nuts, seeds & beans). Reintroduce light animal proteins gradually over the week such as steamed fish, white chicken or eggs.
  • Include fresh juices and plenty of plant-based foods each day for optimal health and wellness.
  • Continue to listen to your body to see what foods work well for you.

Use the Freshii Juice Cleanse as a chance to kick-start your health and break old habits of making poor food choices. Take this opportunity to start fresh, focusing your diet on plant-based and vegetable-rich meals; which will nourish your body from head to toe!

In-house Nutritionist

I’m going to re-do my cleanse in a couple of weeks and will thoroughly follow the Nutritionists suggestions and comments. Had I received this by the time I finished my first cleanse, I would’ve followed it. But better late than never. I’m planning on re-doing the juice cleanse on Feb. 1st.

I’ll follow-up with all of you after my second cleanse and let you know how these nutritional suggestions helped!

Hopefully The Last Surgery For A While

I had a deviated septum surgery yesterday. It went successful, hence why I’m able to post today. I look like I have a mustache with this bandaging over my noses; which is quite uncomfortable. But I don’t feel completely sick to my gut like I have after earlier surgeries.

I am really hoping this is the last surgery for the next 10-15 years that I have to go through. I really wish that all the health problems that arose in 2014 are now finally beyond me and I can move forward to a healthier life in 2015.

There is one more health issue that was discovered last year; that I will be having addressed tomorrow by a specialist. But I’m really not thinking much about it as the specialist initially mentioned she wasn’t too concerned with it herself. I’ll probably have a blood test to rule it out and hopefully, nothing major or concerning will come up.

Then I can focus on losing weight, walking more and spending more time outside with my little Ni this year. Wish me luck for tomorrow’s appointment. I’m really hoping its the last of the bunch.

Freshii’s 3-Day Juice Cleanse Review

JuicesThe challenge I took on earlier this week is now over. It has been a hard three days and quite the roller-coaster when I consider my hunger and satisfaction. Monday was the hardest, Tuesday not so much. By Wednesday evening I’d had enough. Don’t get me wrong, the juices taste absolutely fantastic, as does the salad. It just becomes a bit much when that’s all you’re eating or in this case, drinking.

Here are my results:
Packaging: Hard to commute with 2/5
Taste: Oh so yummy! 5/5
After cleanse results: My body feels lighter 4/5
Did I lose any weight: No. But I didn’t expect to either 4/5
Price: $80 for a 3-day cleanse. A bit high, but totally worth it when you consider watching the employees make your salad and juices fresh in front of you. 4.5/5
Overall rating: 3.5/5
Would I buy it again: Absolutely.
Would I recommend it to my friends: Yes

Overall results: The only reason why I’m giving it a lower than perfect rating is for two reasons:

  1. Packaging was a big issue. Getting the juices home and then carrying them to work was a headache, as the take-out containers aren’t all that great; especially when you’re taking transit. By day 2, I had purchased three water bottles to carry my juices to work and reused the bottles yesterday as well.
  2. Secondly, now that my juice cleanse is over, there is little to no information on what to do next on Freshii’s website. For a company that strives on freshness and healthy eating, you’d think they would have come up with a post-cleanse regime to keep customers engaged and eating better. Of course, all their food is very nutritional. But how about a “now that your cleanse is over, here’s how you can continue to eat healthy and benefit off your cleanse to optimize results” guide.

As for me, I’ve decided that I am going to continue to eat a healthy, junk-free diet. Today, I’ve brought homemade biryani with me and will have an apple and handful of almonds as a snack throughout my work-day. For dinner, I’ve asked my husband to pick up a Metaboost salad for me from Freshii. I’ll have half of it tonight and the rest for lunch tomorrow with a sandwich.

I’m taking baby steps towards my healthier lifestyle and weight-loss to ensure I don’t get sidetracked by all the chocolates, cookies and other junk food around me.

Stay tuned for some of my “healthy-eating” choices now that my juice cleanse is over.
